Police searched Tuesday for a man suspected of beating three homeless people in downtown Los Angeles with a baseball bat before going through their pockets and robbing them.
“This is a violent predator,” said Captian William Hayes, Commanding Officer of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division at a Monday news conference.
Hayes said the three attacks occurred sometime between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday morning when an unknown assailant approached homeless men that were sleeping in either alcoves or stairwells between two separate buildings and assaulted them.
“The assailant viciously attacked the victims while they were sleeping, striking them repeatedly with a baseball bat about the head and shoulders,” Hayes said. “The suspect then went through the victim’s belongings looking for items of value and then left the scene.”
The first attack occurred near Fifth and Flower streets about 4 a.m., and the next two occurred on Wilshire Boulevard near Flower Street, he said.
The victims were located about 6 a.m. by security guards at the locations, who then notified police, said Hayes.
All victims were hospitalized in critical condition with severe head trauma, he said.
“None of the victims have been conscious or able to provide us with information related to the attacks,” Hayes said. “The victims appear to never have been awakened or regained consciousness since the attacks.”
Video of the suspect was shared at the news conference at LAPD headquarters.
He is described as white or Hispanic with dark bushy hair and wearing a blue hat, gray sweatshirt, black shorts and bright white tennis shoes.
Anyone with information that could lead detectives to the suspect was urged to call Detectives Daryn Dupree, David Holmes or Laura Evens of the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division at (213) 486-6860 or the Real Time Analysis and Critical Response Division at (213) 484-6700.
