Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis and City Councilman Jose Huizar were joined by members of the Los Angeles Police Department, The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Violence Intervention Program, and LAC+USC staff to help open the facility.

“Domestic violence destroys too many lives — and it often leaves victims afraid and confused, with nowhere to go,” Garcetti said. “These men and women need a place of refuge where they can find comfort, guidance and all the services they need in one place. Together with our county partners, we have created this new Family Justice Center to give victims and their families the help and relief they deserve.”

The LAC+USC Family Justice Center is a partnership between the county of Los Angeles, the city of Los Angeles, the LAC+USC Medical Center, and several community-based organizations. It will provides resources and services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child and elder abuse, and other forms of violence.

“Too often women and their families are driven into homelessness by domestic violence,” Huizar said. “The Family Justice Center will help us respond to this horrific abuse and give domestic violence victims the support and security they need today, and the hope and inspiration they will surely need tomorrow.”

Law enforcement services are also on site so patients and victims can address most of their medical, legal, and social needs in a single place, Garcetti’s office said, and the facility is based on the nationally-recognized Family Justice Center Alliance model.

“I envision a healthy village that helps the entire neighborhood, and today’s celebration of the Family Justice Center represents a positive step in making that a vision a reality,” Solis said. “This unique, evidence-based model of integrated services brings together law enforcement, forensics, legal, medical, mental health, social and other services directly to victims of violence.”

In other news, a knife-wielding man holed up in a home in Sylmar.
