Authorities Wednesday identified a 12-year-old girl who was killed when a horse she and her 4-year-old sister were riding at the Lake View Terrace Recreation Center fell on them.

The girl was crushed underneath the animal just before 8 p.m. Tuesday in the equestrian area of the center at 11075 Foothill Blvd., according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“According to witnesses, the horse reared and the girls slid off,” Humphrey said. “Then, in a heartbreaking happenstance, the horse fell back onto them.”

Yolanda Ceja died at a hospital about 8:40 p.m., the coroner’s office reported. Her younger sister was critically injured, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The girls’ mother was guiding the animal when the accident occurred, according to CBS2, which reported that the younger girl remains hospitalized with what doctors believe is a collapsed lung.

Area residents told Channel 2 that they were shocked by the tragic accident.

“This is a ranch neighborhood, Lake View Terrace, you know, and a lot of people ride their horses up and down the streets, on the trails and stuff,” resident Rey Zapata said.

The children’s home town was not immediately known.

In other news, a horse was electrocuted in a Lake View Terrace transformer fire.
