A man and woman were rushed to trauma centers in critical condition Sunday evening after firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free them from a vehicle that left the San Diego (405) Freeway and landed in a parking lot in Mission Hills, authorities said.

About 9:40 p.m., the woman was driving the vehicle northbound on the San Diego Freeway near the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway when she wound up in a parking lot at 15525 West Chatsworth St., Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman said.

The man was in the passenger seat, Bastman said.

Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol the black vehicle was traveling at high speeds before the crash. Both occupants of the vehicle were reported talking while trapped inside.

In other news, a stolen car suspect was arrested after a two-hour chase in L.A.
