Always in the mood for Japanese food, I decided to try Kabosu in Toluca Lake. The sushi eatery opened in 2015 and is a sister restaurant to nearby Sushi Yuzu on Riverside Drive. Let’s just say, I was in for a treat. I sat at the sushi bar where all the action takes place, including rubbing elbows with strangers who are usually friendly and just as eager to dine on raw fish.
My sushi chef introduced himself, which I found to be a friendly touch. Looking at the menu, I noticed the dizzying choices. It always surprises me that a Japanese restaurant can have so many menu items.
I was dining with my father so we ordered several plates. The baked crab and spicy tuna roll ($14) literally melted in my mouth. The mixture of the crab and the spicy tuna was well-balanced. The rice on the sushi roll was definitely fresh, which is sometimes hard to find. Well-made sushi rice says a lot about a Japanese restaurant.
The fried calamari salad ($10) had just the right amount of crunch and the dressing tasted similar to sweet miso. I always like to have greens with my meal to add the element of fiber. The greens and fried calamari was a perfect combination.
Other menu items included assorted sashimi ($23), popcorn shrimp tempura appetizer ($10), and hot pot dishes. Expect to be squished in, seating is limited. Also plan to come early since this place fills up fast!
