The Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in San Fernando was among 50 high schools nationwide receiving a $10,000 NBC’s R.I.S.E. America grant to support their theater program, the network announced Monday.
Each school submitted a video celebrating their theater program and a 500-word essay explaining why their school should be awarded the grant and how they will use the $10,000 should they win. They also submitted a letter of recommendation from a school principal or administrator endorsing the application.
NBC is facilitating the program in partnership with the Educational Theatre Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to shaping lives through theatre education.
The grants were inspired by “Rise,” a drama about a high school theatre department and its effects on a small town set to premiere March 13.
In other news, actor Chris Pratt received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
