President Donald Trump Thursday ordered flags to be flown at half staff in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks.
Trump issued the following proclamation Thursday:
“As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 7, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, November 10, 2018. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
Trump also tweeted, “Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”
In a Tweet, Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez said: “This is not normal. This was not inevitable. Again our hearts are broken by tragedy. Again, we mourn as a nation for the victims and their families. And again we are grateful to the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to save lives. But as we seek to offer what comfort we can to those affected with our thoughts and prayers, we must believe that there is more we can do. We can act. We can call upon our elected leaders to work together to end the bloodshed and prevent anything like this from happening — again and again and again.
“Every American should be able to live their entire life free from the fear of experiencing a massacre like this. But early reports have indicated that among the patrons at the Borderline Bar last night were survivors of last year’s Las Vegas massacre. Enough is enough. It’s time to end this madness.”
